Named for the towns of Sax and Zim, Minnesota, the Sax-Zim Bog was created around 10,000 years ago following the last glacial retreat in Minnesota. The area covers 300 square miles and contains a tamarack bog, black spruce, upland aspen/maple forests, floodplain forest, sandy upland pine stands, lakes, rivers, lakes, meadows, farms and towns. This mix of habitat makes the area “THE place” to find northern owls like Great Gray Owls. Not only are there a variety of owl species to be found (Great Gray Owls, Snowy Owls, Northern Hawk Owl, Saw-whet Owl, and the Barred Owl), but other bird species include, woodpeckers, chickadees, purple finches, common redpoll, grosbeaks, nuthatches and crossbills. Join wildlife photographer Jennifer Leigh Warner as we photograph whooping cranes in the Aransas Wildlife Refuge. We will charter a private boat which will take us closer to these rare birds as they hunt for blue crabs in the shallow waters.

We will also spend time in a private photo blind in order to get up-close portraits of the whooping cranes. Additionally we will travel to some other birding hotspots to look for other wildlife that winters along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Late Springtime in the Greater Yellowstone Area is the best time and place to photograph wild bears in the Lower 48. Fresh out of hibernation bears are busy digging up roots and seeking out newly born elk calves. Oftentimes cubs are seen with sow bears and photographing them in the Arrowleaf balsamroot,a bright yellow wildflower, is a treat. Because bears are the main focus of this tour we will often sit and wait for the bears to move into the right location for exceptional photographs.

Spring in Grand Teton National Park is a magical time when the landscape transitions from the quiet of winter to the vibrant awakening of nature. This is the time of year that bears emerge from hibernation (often with cubs!), elk begin migrating to higher elevations, and moose and bison graze in the valleys.

Cuba is well-known for its amazing landscapes, vibrant culture and unique biodiversity. Birding in Cuba is extraordinary. According to the new Endemic Birds of Cuba: A Comprehensive Field Guide, 371 birds have been recorded in Cuba, including 26 which are endemic to the island and 30 which are considered globally threatened. Due to its large land area and geographical position within the Caribbean, Cuba is also extraordinarily important for Neotropical migratory birds—more than 180 species pass through during migration or spend the winter on the island.

Our itinerary takes you to several of the best and most beautiful bird photography locations in Cuba, providing opportunities to see many of Cuba’s endemic species and subspecies as well as many migrants. San Diego County is one of the best places in the country to photograph marine wildlife, including nesting Cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Osprey and so much more. During this weekender you will photograph some of San Diego’s premier wildlife photography hotspots led by an award winning wildlife photographer who has spent over a decade photographing in this location.

Whooping Cranes are North America’s largest bird and they remain endangered with fewer than an estimated 600 birds remaining in the wild.  Whooping Cranes spend the winter on the Texas coast at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.  This regional event presents a unique opportunity to get up to close to the birds via boat as well as photographing other Texas coastal birds like roseate spoonbills, brown pelicans, and more.

Fall is an amazing time to be in South Texas. As the weather begins to cool down the wildlife activity starts to heat up. With many of North America’s birds heading south for the winter we will spend a full day photographing these small birds, like green jays, northern cardinals and Pyrrhuloxia and many more. Next we will trade the small birds for the big bucks. We will head to a private photo ranch where we will photograph some of Texas’s largest buck fighting for mating rights.

This workshop will follow the wildlife each day after enjoying sunrise landscape opportunities at iconic locations each morning.

Photography opportunities abound during fall in the Grand Tetons. The golden colors of Autumn offer a brilliant backdrop to wildlife preparing for Winter. Wolves hunt in coordinated packs while bears are busy fattening up for the long period of cold. All the while the Teton Range looms above, encapsulated in deep snows.

So much to see, you’ll be happy for the long days. However, we will also enjoy night sky photography when conditions allow.

Everyone should visit the Galapagos Islands… the experience is magical! During our adventure we will seek out the endemic species of birds and other animals of the Galapagos. Some of the bird species include Darwin’s finches, Galapagos Penguin, Galapagos Hawk, Galapagos Dove, Swallow-tailed Gull and Waved Albatross—doing their wonderful courtship dance! Other creatures we will see include Land Iguanas, Marine Iguanas, Lava Lizards and two endemic species of butterflies.
