Trip Report - Wildside Nature Tours Winter Yellowstone Workshop

A trio of bison stand on top of a hill in the Hayden Valley in Yellowstone National Park.

Our 2023 Wildside Winter Wildlife Photography Workshop was a great success with photo opportunities around every corner. This was my first time leading a workshop for Wildside Nature Tours and I was fortunate enough to get to start out working with the great Olympus Ambassador Lee Hoy.

We started our trip in West Yellowstone and heading into the park via snow coach. A snow coach is an oversized vehicle designed to transverse the deep snow and is the only way to photograph in this part of the park in the winter as private vehicles are not permitted.

During the first part of our trip we photograph bison covered in snow, breathtaking landscapes, coyotes, swans, American dippers, golden eyes and my personal favorite a pine martin, my first one ever.

West Yellowstone

Photographing in Yellowstone in the winter is like stepping into a black and white movie.

On our way to Gardener, where the northern entrance of the park is, we drove along the Old Yellowstone Trl to photograph big horn sheep, pronghorn, bison, bald eagles and elk.

Lamar Valley is one of the best places in the world to photograph grey wolves. Although we did not see any during this particular trip we did find tons of coyotes, red fox, bison, moose, deer and elk.

We were so lucky to have a fantastic group of photographers with us on this trip and I can’t wait to lead my next Wildside Nature Tour when we head to Nebraska for the Sandhill Crane migration.
